Abstract

The interneuron is defined by Bullock and Horridge (1965) as "An internuncial neuron: one which is neither sensory nor (purely) effector innervating, but connects neurons with neurons". According to this definition, most neurons in the central nervous system (CNS) and some neurons in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) can be called as interneurons. In the begining, interneurons were thought to be only facilitatory in function which made amplifying effects. Afterwards, the interneuron was considered as a commutator which transfer an excitatory input into inhibitory output.
