Abstract

The neurons, being defined as the cells of ectodermal origin that are differentiated in the way to receive, integrate and transmit stimuli, show a great range of sizes, shapes, as well as of modes of the connection to other neurons or to the non-neuronal elements. Every neuron has a cell body (soma) and cell processes. Dendrites are those cell processes specialized for somatopetal impulse conductions, and neurites are specialized for somatofugal impulse conductions. The axon or axis cylinder is a neuronal process which shows a fairly constant thickness for more or less long stretches in its course, like a cable.
