Summary

Catecholamine receptors are macromolecules, probably proteins, localized on the cell membrane, and interaction between eatecholamines and receptors triggers a cellular response. Three main types of catecholamine receptors, i.e., β-adrenergic, α-adrenergic and dopamine receptors, are classified. β-adrenergic and α-adrenergic receptors may be subdivided into two further functional subclasses, β1 and β2, and α1 and α2, respectively. These catecholamine receptors can be identified by binding assay with an appropriate radioactive ligand (agonist or antagonist) which serve as a probe for the receptor.
