  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

A lot of evidence has been accumulated over the past 50 years showing that opiates act by virtue of interactions with specific receptors. The minimal structural requirements for opiate activity are the presence of an aromatic ring structure and a nitrogen atom, usually as a tertiary amine, that is located at a distance of 2 saturated carbon atoms from the aromatic moiety, for example, 1,2-dipheny1-1-dimethylamino ethane. Morphine is an asymmetric molecule.
