The rhythm generator of the medullary respiratory center is modeled by a neural network and the results of computer simulation are compared with physiological facts. In the network six groups of respiratory neurons constitute two recurrent inhibition circuits operating as relaxation oscillators and mutual inhibition paths between the oscillators. Inspiration-expiration alternating rhythm is generated and maintained by dynamic interactions among excitatory and inhibitory neuron groups.
