  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

It is well known that the cerebellar cortex receives only two kinds of afferents, i.e., climbing fibers (CF) and mossy fibers (MF). The former originates mostly from the inferior olivary nucleus (IO) and synapses on Purkinje cells (P-cells) of the contralateral cerebellar cortex while the latter comes from various nuclei in spinal cord, medulla oblongata and pons, and synapses on granule cells of which the axons, parallel fibers, synapse on P-cells. In spite of numerous investigations on CF input system of the cerebellar cortex, its functional role is still largely obscure.
