  • Look Inside

Intracerebral administration of Holt's adjuvant (alum phosphate) in rabbits resulted in the development of general convulsion clinically and characteristic neuronal changes histologically. Topographical investigation on thesd changes disclosed symmetrical involvement of the cingulate gyri, hippocampal gyri, substantia innominata as well as the area preoptica in the cerebrum. In the basal ganglia, reticular nuclei and mammillary nuclei were constantly ivolved in contrast with the spared striatum. Substantia nigra, reticular nuclei and midline structures of the midbrain were found to be the sites of the most sever involvement. And the median raphe, reticular nuclei, facial nuclei in the brain stem were also involved.

The findings suggested that these experimentally produced changes were remarkably similar to Alzheimer's neurofibrillary changes of human brain in their structure and distribution.
