  • Look Inside

Polysaccharide is histochemically easily synthesizedfrom glucose-1-phosphate by the phosphorylase andbranching enzyme activities anywhere in nervetissues in the suitable substrate mixture. Activephosphorylase is demonstrable in nerve cell bodiesas well as in nerve fibers, but it is varied in intensityby the art of nerve cells. The activity is stimulatedby muscle adenylic acid as well as ATP, magnesiumions, and glucagon, and is inhibited by phlorizinand cobaltous ions (only except the reaction in nervecell bodies). Fluoride stimulates the histochemicalreaction for phosphorylase, because of inhibitionof phosphorylase-phosphatase.

Polysaccharide synthesis from uridine-cliphos-phoglucose by the UDPG-glycogen synthetase mayoccur sparingly in nerve tissues as well, althoughit is very difficult in histochemistry.
