Since Sir Archibald E. Garrod's clear recognition in1908 of the relationship between gene, enzyme, anddisease in certain conditions which he called "inbornerrors of metabolism,"1) we have had a very successfulmodel for understanding the etiology of inherited diseases. The details of the relationship between the geneand the enzyme have been greatly clarified by theresults of biochemical genetics.
