Although excellent recent work from manysources has elucidated to a great extent themetabolic pathways of complex lipids in thenervous system, the actual rates of biosynthesis and of turnover of different lipids ofthe central nervous system at differentperiods of the life of the animal remainmostly unknown. However, the informationavailable suggests that different lipids appearat different times during the development ofthe nervous system, and that their respective rates of accumulation vary quite specifically according to a fairly rigid timetable.
