  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

For a better understanding of etiopathogene-sis of viral encephalitides, the histopathologic study of experimental herpes simplex encepha-litis of rabbits has been carried out. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. In cases of the intracerebral inoculation of virus, abundant nuclear inclusion bodies were present in nerve cells, oligodendroglias, ependymal cells and fibrocytes of meninges. In contrast to the intense inflammatory reaction of meninges, the response of nervous parenchy-ma to the viral invasion was actually scarce.

2. By the intracorneal inoculation, the ra-refaction necrotic foci primarily developed inthe pontomedullary regions at the same side of the inoculation. The cerebral involvement of necrotic character which apparently exhibited a delayed onset following the former lesions was found in both the temporal cortex and Ammons-horn.

3. The distribution and properties of the lesions of the cerebrum in cases with the intra-venous administration of virus were almost similar to those with the intracorneal inocula-tion.

4. The histochemical constituents of the nuclear inclusions in herpetic infection were mainly of proteins with nucleic acids. Basic protein in the inclusions was small in quantity, however.
