Inborn errors of metabolism as a cause of mental and physical retardation

はじめに

　重症心身障害とは精神薄弱という病名と同じく単一の病名ではなく，種々の原因にもとづく症候群である。臨床的な便宜的な病名であるので患者の真の病名ではなく，なんらそれに対しての根本的治療を示すものでもない。中枢神経系のなんらかの障害により，知能および身体発育が著明に遅れた状態であり，この中に現在の医学で見出せない未知の遺伝性疾患や，胎内性障害による疾患が含まれている可能性は十分にある。

　ここでは今まで実際に重症心身障害者を対照として検索したことを中心に述べ，その成因として代謝異常がどれくらいの頻度で発見できるか，また重障児の発生原因と現在の重障児の脳の障害度との関連を気脳術を中心に述べ，これからの検索のための参考としたいと考えている。

In the severely retarded patients admitted in Nishitaga National Hospital, inborn errors of metabolism have been screened to investigate the major causes of mental and physical retardation.

116 patients were examined to classify under the diagnosis of prenatal, perinatal and postnatal etiology.

Metabolic disorders as a cause of prenatal etiology have been found about 10%, chromosomal aberrations 4.3%, and others including severe infection, Sturge-Weber syndrome, tuberous scle-rosis and small for date were 16% in the total patient examined.
