  • Look Inside

The neuroglia is apt to be regarded as the mere connective or supporting tissue of the central nervous system. There has been, however, an increasing tendency for attribut-ing various kinds of physiological functionsto this special tissue, which forms together with neuron elements, the central nervous system, the important integrative organ of the animal and human body.

Among several functions assigned to the neuroglia, probably the most important one concerns the metabolism of the central nervous system. Progresses in the morphology, especially of the electron-microscopy, as well as in the biochemistry have shown the intimate correlation between the neuron elements and neuroglia, and it is becoming evident that the latter is perhaps responsiblefor the nursing or nutritive function of the former, thus playing the role of the indispen-sable by-player on the stage of the central nervous system.

In this paper some aspects of the morpho-logy of neuroglia are discussed, paying spe-cial attention to the classification and criteria of three kinds of the glia, to the biology of the so-called neuroglial fibers, as well as to the morphological interrelations between the neuron elements and neuroglia in connection with the mechanism of blood-brain barrier.
