  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Our cases, 29 in number, consist mainly ofthose who examined 16-25 years afterthe infection of Economo's Encephalitis. Theage range at the time of examination isfrom 26 to 46 years. As to the clinical symptoms the neurological aspect is as follows:parkinsonism existed in 23 cases, while 6cases did not show it. The stiffness of facialexpressions and body posture was seen to becommon to all cases. This is considered tobe the most fundamental sign of the postencephalitic patients and also of parkinsonism.

The psychiatric aspect is as follows: 1) The characteristic change of personality in all 29 cases, infantile attitude, loss ofrestraint, impulsive hyperactivity and wandering

 2) The peculiar disposition, which is characteristic of parkinsonism (in 23 cases).

 3) Hallucination, telepathy, "gemachte Phänomene" (passivity phenomena), obsessive-compulsive symptoms, etc. (in 24 cases).

 4) Delusion (in 12 cases).

 5) A seizure in which simultaneous aggravation of parkinsonism and above-mentionedsymptoms was seen. During the seizure amarked increase of suggestibility was observed (in 18 cases).

 6) Moderate impairment of intelligence (in14 cases).

Among those findings the personality change to infantile attitude was the most fundamental condition and may be considered tobe closely connected with the neurological symptoms. The hallucination and delusions areconsidered secondary to this fundamental disturbance. In those cases with parkinsonism, the severity of the psychiatric symptoms isfound to be related to that of parkinsonism.
