  • Look Inside

Tissue engineering (TE) is a new discipline that offers the potential to create replacement structures from autologous cells and biodegradable polymer scaffolds. Because TE constructs contain living cells, they may have the potential to grow, self-repair, and self-remodel. The application of this technique to cardiovascular surgery was pioneered by Drs. Mayer and Vacanti at the Children's Hospital, Boston, in 1994. They showed the feasibility of tissue engineering to create pulmonary valve leaflets and pulmonary artery in a laboratory model.
