Coronary angioplasic procedures using metallic stents have been recognized to contribute to reduced acute occlusion rate and long-term restenosis rate as compared with conventional balloon angioplasty. However, despite advances in the clinical use of coronary stents, there still are limitations to general applicability of the technique. Although multiple complex biological pathways are cooperatively triggered to results in excessive neoarterial tissue growth (intimal hyperplasia), the subsequent cellular events must be carefully considered for pharmacological postangioplasty restenosis.
