Myogenic progenitor cells in bone marrow has been demonstrated recently. Furthermore, two research groups reported that pluripotent SP cells, which efficiently exclude Hoechst dye 33342 and can be isolated from bone marrow by flow cytometry, differentiated into both the hematopoietic and the muscle cell lineage. Surprisingly, SP cell could be also obtained from skeletal muscle by the same procedure, and showed reconstruction of the hematopoietic system. On the other hand, efficient, non-antigenic gene transfer vectors are being developed for muscle progenitor cells.
