  • Look Inside

Effects of actual spaceflight and/or simulation models such as bedrest or hindlimb suspension on skeletal muscles in human and rats were studied. In response to gravitational unloading, the percent distribution of fibers expressing pure type I myosin heavy chain (MHC) in an ankle plantarflexor, soleus, decreased. A de novo appearance of fibers co-expressing type I and various II MHC was noted in unloaded muscle. The atrophy was prominent in slow-twitch fibers.
