Experimental and clinical studies have shown that the synaptic inhibition increases and the cellular excitability decreases in a large brain area including epileptogenic focus during an interictal period. It was shown that high-frequency activation of excitatory synapses produced a large inhibitory postsynaptic potential (IPSP) mediated by recurrent GABAergic circuits following action potential discharges and then diminished gradually and markedly IPSP, leading to seizure activities.
