  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The chimpanzee's sense of taste was investigated by directly sampling chimpanzee food in the natural habitat. Each of adult male targets was followed, their feeding activity was recorded, and the same food item eaten by the target was tasted. The taste of food was divided into 18 categories based on 5 basic tastes (sweet, salty, sour, bitter and astringent) and their combination. One hundred twenty three food items belonging to 95 species were tasted. Surprisingly, from the simple numbers of food items, foods were most often characterized as“insipid”.
