There is increasing evidence that aldehydes generated endogenously during the process of lipid peroxidation are causally involved in most of the pathophysiological effects associated with oxidative stress in cells and tissues. A number of reactive lipid aldehydes, such as 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal, malondialdehyde, and acrolein have been implicated as causative agents in cytotoxi processes initiated by the exposure of biological systems to oxidizing agents. The basis for this finding is an immunochemical approach that provides a measure of the protein-bound lipid aldehydes.
