To elucidate the pathogenesis of epilepsy and develop a therapy for this disease, it is essential to obtain an epileptic model animal that produces characteristic seizures resembling those in humans. Such candidates used for epilepsy research include mouse models such as El mouse (partial complex seizure model), tottering mouse (absence seizure), epf, starger mouse and model rats involving GEPR (audiogenic seizures), GAERS (absence seizure), SER (absence seizure and tonic convulsion) and NER (audiogenic seizure, tonic-clonic convulsion).
