  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

In the sex differentiation of the brain, importance of estrogen receptor (ER) has been discussed. In this process, conversion of testosterone into estrogen by brain aromatase has been considered as an important step. In addition, we found transient expression of ER in the two independent regions of the newborn rat brain: i.e., the ventromedial subnucleus of the facial nucleus and the layer five of the primary auditory cortex. Since no clear relationship between the ER and aromatase was detected in these regions, we consider that the ER in these particular regions is not directly related to the brain sex differentiation.
