Nucelar receptors for steroid/thyroid hormones, vitamin A, D and fat-soluble ligands form a gene superfamily of ligand-inducible transaction factors, which plays an important roles in a wide spectrum of biological events by regulating expression of a set of target genes. This family comprises also a subfamily of orphan receptors, whose ligands have not been identified. The genetic mutations in the nuclear receptors are known to cause herediatry disease lacking ability to respond to hormones.
