  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

From an evolutionary point of view, bio-warning and defense mechanisms are the most fundamental functions for the survival of living organisms. Primordial systems provide the widest range of degrees of freedom in expressing plasticity. From the very earliest stages of evolution, before the birth of the nervous system, humoral mechanisms such as primitive immune and inflammatory reactions played important parts in the bio-warning and defense mechanisms. Various means of signaling, as used by the ancestral humoral bio-warning systems, would have come into use in the primitive nervous nociceptive systems.
