  • Look Inside

Gap junction-mediated cell-cell communication (GJC) is a special category of intercellular ionic channels that are poorly ion selective and permeable to molecules with molecular weights less than about 1.5 kDa and sometimes functions as intercellular adhesion element. In most developmental systems, GJC can be detected from very early stages of embryogenesis. As development progresses, however, GJC becomes restricted, forming discrete boundaries to lead to the subdivision of the embryo.
