  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Previous anatomical and physiological studies suggested that ventral premotor cortex (PMv) was subdivided into two areas. It is known that area F4, that is the caudal part of PMv, is related to proximal arm movement, while F5 that is the rostral part of PMv, is related to distal hand movement. But this does not mean simple somatotopical organization like in the primary motor cortex.

The recent single unit studies in alert monkeys showed that neurons in the F4 are bimodal, responding to both visual and tactile stimuli or activated both with the visual stimuli and in relation to arm movements.
