  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The microcirculation of the brain is discussed from the standpoint of the interactions between blood cells and the capillaries associated with parenchymal cells. Gaehtgens and his group proposed two possible mechanisms for the regulation of capillary flow : restriction of capillary flow by an electrical charge, and capillary diametric changes. The proteoglycans of the capillary endothelial cells have anionic sites which extend into the capillary lumen. On the other hand, one of the major membraneproteins of RBCs is glycophorin, which carries sialic acid and thereby most of the negative charge of the surface.
