Central nervous system (CNS) stem cell may have a number of important advantages as donor material for the reconstruction of damaged neuronal circuits in the diseased adult brain. Neural plate cells from the early embryo from the transgenic GT4.2 mice (B-galactosidase positive ; Skarnes et al., Genes & Dev 6 : 903-918, 1992) or CBA mice (Thy-1.2 positive strain) was used as a source of marked donor cells to determine whether embryonic CNS progenitor cells can be used as donor material for implantation into the adult mouse brain.
