This article reviews the latest psychophysical findings that are related to saccadic eye movements and attention shift. In particular, it attempts to understand the findings in terms of neural “maps” of space and features.

Disengagement of attention is considered the initial step for execution of saccadic eye movement. Effects such as the “express saccade” nicely underscore their relationship. The efficiency of attentional disengagement, however, is affected by spatial context.
