  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The striatum, main receiving station of the basal ganglia, has been divided into two compartments based upon staining patterns for many neurochemical, receptor, afferent and efferent systems : a small acetylcholinesterase (AchE) -poor compartment (patch or striosome) and an AchE-rich matrix compartment. The patches are round or ovoid areas 0.3-0.6 mm in diameter about the same diameter as columns in the cerebral cortex and embedded in AchE-rich matrix. They are most prominent in the head of the caudate nucleus. The patches contain higher Dl and opiate receptors.
