The pontomesencephalic area of brainstem and the hypothalamus (including preoptic area) are key sites for regulation of sleep and wakefulness, since stimulating or lesioning a part of these areas induces changes in behavioral and/or EEG sleep/waking patterns. In this paper we overview properties of neurons in these areas, basing upon single neuronal studies by us and others. Recent anatomical studies have revealed that groups of neurons in the brainstem have one of classical transmitters such as noradrenaline, serotonin and acetylcholine.
