Central neuronal receptors can be classified into two categories : (i) the receptor ion channel complex and (ii) the receptor linked with ion channels via intracellular transduction mechanisms. The former directly mediates synaptic transmission, whereas the latter may contribute to modulate synaptic transmission. With a help of newly developed slice-patch clamp method, it has now become practical to analyze synaptic transmission in relation with single channel currents. Also, the method has opened up a possibility to study developmental changes of central receptor channels.

In the initial part of this review, as an example of the receptor belonging to the first category, we present our results on glycine receptor channels and their developmental changes. Glycine receptor a subunit exists in fetal and adult forms. Switching from fetal to adult form is completed within 3 postnatal weeks. We demonstrate that this molecular switching causes shortening of mean channel open time, thereby shortening the time course of glycinergic inhibitory postsynaptic responses in the spinal cord.
