  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Substantial proportions of neuronal cells composing many loci in the nervous system are destined to die at the terminal stage of the ontogeny. Molecular mechanisms of the programmed cell death have not been analyzed in view of killer proteins in relation with shortage of neurotrophic factors.

The motoneuronal death is prevented concurrently with increases in the branches of nerve ending and number of acetylcholine receptors and with disrupted distribution of cell adhesion factors by treatment of chick embryo (E4.5~9) with curare, but not with nicotine or decamethonium which blocks the muscle activity as curare does.
