  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The pronoucement of death is generally based on the cessation of respiration and heart beat (cardiac death), but brain death has recently gained wide acceptance among physicians and other circles. In 1985, a study group headed by Prof. K. Takeuchi has established a formula for the determination of brain death. They are: (1) coma with cerebral unresponsiveness, (2) apnea, (3) dilated pupils, (4) absence of brain stem function, and (5) electrocerebral silence.

The public generally views the practice of brain death with suspicion; to them, a patient with beating heart is not dead.
