  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

After elucidating the primary structure of various Na channels, main interest is being focused on what molecular structure is responsible for the functional characteristics of ion channels, consisting of gating process, ion selectivity and sensor for the change in electrical field within the cell membrane. At present, two lines of approach are promising, the pharmacological study using the biological toxins and the structure-function study using the point mutation of c-DNA. In this articles, the pharmacological properties of several biological toxins which selectively modify the Na channel functions have been reviewed and an attempt to reconcile the pharmacological findings with those obtained from the molecular biology studies has been made.
