Brain edema is an increase in brain volume due to an increased brain water content. It occurs secondary following various intracranial lesions. Brain edema results increased intracranial pressure, and causes the worst patients' prognosis. The causes of brain edema formations are an increased permeability of blood brain barrier and astrocytes. In the present paper, we focused on cytokines as a mediator of permability changes in the brain. Various cytokines, including inflammatory cytokines:interleukins-1, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor α, vascular endothelial growth factor, have been reported as having roles in producing brain edema so far. We review the clinical and experimental papers about the cytokines and the brain edema. Also we distinguish the roles of cytokines in different lesions including cerebrovascular diseases, neurotrauma, brain tumors. Finally, we discuss about the future prospect of studies about the cytokines and brain edema.
