脳機能発現におけるグリア細胞の役割

グリア細胞は様々な神経伝達物質受容体を発現しており，さらに，グルタミン酸やATPなどの化学伝達物質を遊離することができる。これらの機能分子によって，脳内ではニューロンからグリア，グリアからニューロンへの情報伝達が生じているはずである。最近になって，このグリアとニューロンの間の相互情報伝達が，ニューロンの興奮性や形態の維持に影響を与えている証拠が次々に挙げられてきた。グリア細胞はこれまで考えられてきたようなニューロン回路の維持や修復などの脇役ではなく，情報処理機構に積極的に関与して，高次脳機能を発現するための主役と位置づけなければならない。さらに，精神神経疾患の多くがグリア細胞とニューロンとの相互関係の異常に起因する可能性も高く，脳科学の新しいターゲットと注目され始めている。

Recent researches on glial cells have revealed the expression of neurotransmitter receptors on them and the release of neurotransmitters from them. Based on those functional molecules dynamic interactions between neuronal and glial cells in the brain have been recognized as one of the substantial machineries for information processing to cause the higher order of functions. Furthermore abnormalities in those glia-neuron interactions have been suggested to be important causal factors to induce many kinds of neurological disorders.
