Islet-1 is one of the most conserved LIM-homeodomain-type transcription factor in evolution which regulates differentiation and specification of motor and sensory neurons. By comparing the genomes of various species including those of zebrafish, mouse and human, we could identify the enhancers which regulate expression of Islet-1 specific for distinct subtypes of motor and sensory neurons. Such analysis exploiting comparative genomics will facilitate greatly our understanding the gene regulation network for establishment of the nervous system.
