  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The authors discussed about the historical development of the conception of erythroderma in the dermatological field. The disorders belonging to erythroderma are no longer believed to be sui generis, but a syndrome which may be caused by several miscellaneous etiologic factors ; the attempt is also being tried in the abroad that the disease should be classified according to the symptomatic manifestation and/or predilection of the primary focus on the skin. Fifty two cases in the author's clinic, were studied during 9 years (1959-1967). According to clinical pictu-res and histology, they were classified into2 cases of reticulo-lymphoblastoma10 cases of erythrodermatic dermatoses (4 cases, psoriasis, 3 cases, eczema, 2 cases, pityriasis rubra pilaris, 1 case, lichen planus)and 18 cases of toxico-allergically induced edematous-vesiculous erythroderma.

Seventeen cases were of the eczema-foregoing type and 5 cases of unknown cause. The latter two groups belong to the etiologically undetermined erythroderma.

The authors also insist that erythroderma should not be regarded as self-limitted independent entity, but two types could be conveniently employed for clinical classification : érythrodermies érythemato-squameuses sèches and érythrodermies vesiculooedemateuses by Degos.
