  • Look Inside

Relationship between the onset of dermatitis feminea recidivans faciei and cosmetics used has been subjected to study. Patch test was carried out on 33 patients with the disease and 10 normal females. Three hundred and twenty nine cosmetics were examined for the patients and 74 cosmetics for the control persons respectively. The results were as follows:

Amog the cosmetics which showed positive reaction, there were so called basic cosmetics such as foundations, base creams, lotions and so on.

Photopatch test was carried out using 182 patients. At the end of 24 hours after a cosmetic was applied, the skin was irradiated for 5 minutes at a distance of 50 cm with the artificial sun light. Eighteen patients showed positive reaction with respect to 23 cosmetics among 182 cosmetics tested.

The pH value on the skin surface where cosmetics are usually applied was also determined in order to study whether cosmetics might give any influences on the pH value on the skin surface. Most of the cosmetics have relatively high pH values. the Torehead and flexure of the arm of each 30 normal males and normal females were used for the determination. The pH values obtained on the forehead of the females were much higher than those of the males and also those obtained on the arms of the females.

These experimental results might indicate that a cosmetic is one of the causes of dermatitis feminea recidivans faciei.
