  • Look Inside

In 60 elderly patients with chronic otitis media above 60 years of age, we studied on a trend of their visit to the ENT clinic in the Teikyo Uni-versity Hospital, and the results of tempanoplasty from 1980 to 1986.

The results were as follows: 1) Motivations for receiving tympanoplasty of the patients were for both hearing improvement and stoppage of otorrhea in 61.6%, and for hearing improvement only in 25%, and for stop-page of otorrhea in 13.4%.

2) Complications beside otological diseases revea-led hypertension in 30% and for 10% respirtory diseases.

3) Postoperative hearing improvement less than 40 dB hearing level of air conduction was 48% and more than 15 dB hearing gain was 41%.

4) Types of tympanoplasty were 54.4% for type I, and 17.6% for type III.

5) Postoperative complications were not found generally but locally perforation of the ear drum, recurrence of cholesteatoma and myringitis in few cases.

Through these results, we emphasize that tym-panoplasty for elderly people with chronic otitis media should be encouraged for better communi-cation and life.
