  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We studied the temporal bones of a 37-year-old male who died of head trauma 7 days after an accident. He had left facial paralysis on admission. The left temporal bone showed a longitudinal frac-ture that extended through the mastoid, posterior part of the external auditory canal and petrous pyramid, in parallel with the major petrous nerve. The facial nerve was edematous and the number of neurofilament protein-positive fibers was reduced in the paralyzed side. The cause of the facial paraly-sis was deduced to be ischemia as a result of bleed-ing induced by the fracture in the facial canal at the geniculate portion.
