  • Look Inside

Until 1961 the number of diphtheria patients in Japan was about 15,000 during a year. In the past several years, however, there have been more or less than 10 patients affected with diphtheria in one year.

Recently we treated 2 cases of laryngeal diphthe-ria. The first case was a 2-year-old infant. The second was a 3-year-old. The first case was immedi-ately cured by use of Erythromycin & antitoxin. But the second died from heart failure. The death was considered to refer partly to out of expiration date of antitoxin administered.

Now in Japan, diphtheria antitoxin has not been produced, however, its production is still needed for diphtheria which might be imported, or that it might affect infants who have not been immunized. Furthermore, it is needed as diagnosis ex juvantibus in the differential diagnosis of croup.
