  • Look Inside

Hamartoma is a tumor-like malformation in which various tissue components with various degrees of differentiation are abnormally arranged. A 7-month-old girl presented with postnatal snoring and coughing on suckling. Physical examination,x-ray and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a forefinger-tip-sized pedunculate mass arising from the base of the tongue. The mass was transorally removed by YAG-laser. Pathological diagnosis of the surgical specimen was hamartoma composed of a mixture of salivary glands, adipose tissue, connective tissue, and smooth muscle. The patient's symptoms completely subsided postoperatively, and she was currently free from disease 5 years after surgery. Reported cases of hamartomas of the base of the tongue were reviewed from the viewpoint of developmental biology.
