We measured the contractile activity of theciliary muscle obtained post mortem from an 87-year-old female. Posterior chamber lens implanta-tion had been performed in both eyes 2 yearsbefore. After removing the cornea for keratoplasty, the eyeball was kept in Krebs solution, from whichthe ciliary muscle was dissected. The ciliary musclepreparation showed phasic contraction in responseto electrical field stimulations. The amplitude ofcontraction increased along with the number ofstimuli. This contraction was completely blockedafter application of atropine at the concentration of 10-6M. Exogenously applied carbachol induced dose- dependent contraction. Noradrenalin exertedno action on the muscle. The findings showed thatthe ciliary muscles maintained their contractileactivity at this age and after implantation ofintraocular lens.
