We studied the sensitivity change with a de-creased visual field size in normal subjects andpatients with optic neuritis. The patients had avisual acuity of 0.8 or better. The subjects weredivided into two groups. The first group included 10eyes of 10 normal subjects and 12 eyes of 12 patientswith optic neuritis. The second group subjects were10 eyes of 10 normal subjects and 18 eyes of 17patients. The subjects of the first group weremeasured with an automated perimeter Octopus bythe two programs, the one has test points arrangedto a central 30° visual field and another, to central10°. The second group subjects were examined bythe two programs, the one has test points arrangedto a central 10° visual field and another, to central 5°. The mean sensitivity of the same points wascompared between the two programs. In normalsubjects of the two groups, the mean sensitivitysignificantly increased with a decreased visual fieldsize. In the first group patients with optic neuritisthe mean sensitivity significantly increased with adecreased field together with the increased sensitiv-ity in the abnormal points. In the second patientsgroup the mean sensitivity unchanged despite thechange of visual field size. The reason for un-changed sensitivity was considered to be largervariation in sensitivity during the course of opticneuritis. The effect of testing field size on sensitiv-ity was operative in both normal subjects andpatients with optic neuritis.
