  • Look Inside

We performed ophthalmological screening in 1,881 18-month-old children during a health-check program. The first step consisted of questionnaires from parents followed by interview and inspection by pediatricians and health nurses. Problem cases were then examined by an ophthalmologist as the second step.

Through this procedure, we detected 17 children, 0.90%, with ophthalmological disorders. They in-cluded 5 cases, 0.26%, with strabismus, 9 children, 0.48%, with refractive errors and 4 with organic disorders. Some easily detectable disorders, particu-larly esotropia and organic ones, had been already under treatment elsewhere.

Because of relative ease and efficacy in the cur-rent method, we advocate ophthalmological screen-ing during health-check program for 18-month-old children.
