We evaluated the corneal endothelial protective effect of ViscoatTM during surgery for hypermature cata-ract in 31 eyes of 31 patients. ViscoatTM contains 3% hyaluronic acid sodium and 4% chondroitin sulfate. A soft shell technique was used after staining the anterior capsule by 0.5% indocyanine green. After continuous curvilinear capsu-lorrhexis (CCC), phacoemulsification-aspiration was performed with intraocular lens implantation. CCC succeeded in all the 31 eyes. The corneal endothelial cell count averaged 2,883 cells/mm2 before surgery and 2,764 cells/mm2 after surgery. The rate of reduction averaging 4.96%. No serious complications developed during or 6 months after surgery. The findings show that ViscoatTM may be effective in protecting the corneal endothelial cells during surgery for hyper-mature cataract.
