  • Look Inside

We tried to improve the reading ability in 10 patients who underwent vitrectomy for proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The correctd visual acuity in the better eye ranged from 0.08 to 0.5. Patients were asked to read newspaper letters magnified 2 to 12 times at the distance of 25 cm to assess their residual vision and appropriate lens power. All the 10 patients could read a newspaper with a loupe or reading glasses with the magnification power of 2.75 to 6 times. The power of prescribed low vision aids varied even in patients with the visual acuity of 0.1 or less. No correlation was present between 1ogMAR visual acuity and the power of aids, or 1ogMAR visual acuity and the size of letters which the patients could read. This discrepancy appeared to be due to differences between the visual acuity which is routinely measured and the reading ability for longer sentences. Central visual field of 15 degrees or greater seemed to enable the patients to read with conventional low vision aids.
